From the time Los Angeles was founded in 1781 to 1820, the population of the settlement spiked to six hundred and fifty citizens. Even though by today's standards it seems to be an insignificant number, it was the largest civilian city in Spanish California at the time. Mexico took control of the area in 1821, which only lasted until 1847 after the American Mexican war. After some squabbling over California territories between America and Europe, California became a part of the United States in 1850. Los Angeles has since grown considerably and is a hub of cultural activity. One particularly famous portion of the city, most famously known as Hollywood, is the center of media attention and when searching for hotels Hollywood visitors can discover the glamour of this hotspot.

When staying in local hotels Hollywood guests will have no trouble finding luxury. It is common for these hotels to feature on-site restaurants and bars, valet parking, concierge service and room service. Other common amenities include luggage storage, safety deposit boxes and terraces. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are also usual. A few feature childcare services in addition to designated smoking areas. Common activities include fitness centers and swimming pools and a fair amount also have jacuzzis, saunas, spas and massage centers. For those visiting officially, business centers are very common and many have meeting and banquet rooms.

In March, visitors can enjoy the latest fashion, fine art, interior design and cuisine during the Art and Design Walk. The event takes place in West Hollywood on Melrose Avenue, Robertson and Beverly Boulevards. The festivities are scattered in a classy environment with live entertainment and one-of-a-kind exhibits in and around the three hundred businesses of the district. Participating establishments include galleries, interior design showrooms, fashion boutiques and fine restaurants. It is a good opportunity for visitors to keep up with the latest trends and sample some of the best foods and wines.

The Russian Cultural Festival is a family oriented event held in May that is ten years old. It features live entertainment, food, music, arts, crafts, jewelry and more. It celebrates the Russian culture and heritage of the three hundred thousand Russian-speaking people in the area and it marks the beginning of Russian Cultural Month. It also features family activities. It is an extremely popular event with the locals and visitors alike and the best part of all is that it is free.

The West Hollywood Halloween Costume Carnival is supposedly the largest street party in the world. The event takes place on Santa Monica Boulevard and attracts some five hundred thousand people each year. It is not a family friendly event, as the participants tend to get very creative with costumes and the party can get rather wild. However, it has been proven to be a blast for adults and kid friendly Halloween events take place prior to the actual holiday. The carnival features live music on four stages and a parade. Fittingly, a costume contest is held in addition to the crowning of the "Queen of the Carnival". Preceding events that are family oriented include seasonal food vendors, live entertainment and pumpkin carving contests in addition to other children's activities.

The Hollywood Farmer's Market features fresh produce from local farmers in addition to fish, jams, jellies, juices and honey. It also has free-range poultry, meat, free-range eggs, cheese, olives, mushrooms, sauces, dried fruits and nuts. Espresso, hot pancakes, bread, biscuits and ethnic foods prepared on-site are also found here. Non-food items include jewelry, clothing, crafts and gift items. The market presents live entertainment, including street musicians, cooking demonstrations, cookbook autographing and workshops for children in addition to other family friendly events.

For movie fans of local hotels Hollywood is home to the Hollywood Heritage Museum. It depicts the early history of filmmaking, including pictures from the days of silent film, movie props, historic documents and other relevant paraphernalia.

Hollywood Boulevard includes many of the most popular attractions, including the celebrities' hand and footprints in the cement in front of the Chinese Theatre. Visitors can also find the Kodak Theatre, Madame Tussaud's and the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex here. This iconic area will call you back for another visit because once just isn't enough.
